I often work closely with businesses and non-profits that come to me with the same concern: “Why are my people not on the same page?” My response is usually a simple but revealing question: “Can your team clearly repeat back your vision, mission and values; and when was the last time you talked about them together?”
More often than not, I’m met with blank stares or vague answers. These three pillars: vision, mission and values are sometimes loosely defined or buried in a forgotten slide deck. But when they are clear, consistently communicated and integrated into the organization’s culture, teams feel confident and empowered. Teams that have this are aligned. They run with a renewed sense of purpose and meaning.
So if alignment is as simple as clarifying and communicating these three areas, why don’t more teams do it?
The truth is, most leadership teams are unclear about the definitions themselves. They use vision, mission and values interchangeably, confusing their teams and diluting their impact. Let’s break down the distinctions and provide practical examples to illustrate how powerful clarity in these areas can be.
What’s a vision?
A vision tells everyone “what mountain we plan to take.” It’s the future destination that gives your team direction and aspiration. Vision is your “true north.” It might take 20 or even 30-plus years to fully realize, but it provides a long-term purpose that guides decision-making and strategy.
For example, Southwest Airlines’ vision is “to become the world’s most loved, most efficient and most profitable airline.” This vision is ambitious, inspiring and measurable. It gives teams a clear understanding of the long-term goal and helps guide daily decision-making toward it.
What’s a mission?
A mission answers the question: “What are we doing today to get closer to our vision?” Mission statements focus on the present and near future—typically in a 3- to 5-year window. They outline what your organization is actively doing to fulfill its vision today. Unlike the vision, which rarely changes, a mission can evolve as your organization grows and hits new milestones.
TED’s vision is, “Spread ideas.” It is short, powerful and action-oriented. TED’s mission explains what they do every day to achieve their long-term vision of a more informed, inspired world.
What are values?
Values are the “rules of the road.” They tell your team how to behave, what’s expected and what’s unacceptable. They set the tone for your culture, reinforcing what matters most in your organization.
When values are clear, they serve as an internal compass that helps people make decisions without constant oversight. They also empower team members to hold each other accountable to a shared standard.
One of Zappos’ core values is “Deliver WOW Through Service.” This value isn’t just a motto; it informs how they hire, train and serve their customers. It’s embedded in the DNA of their business.
If your team feels misaligned, start by going back to the basics. Clarify your vision, mission and values, then bring them into regular conversations. Build them into your meetings, your hiring practices, your performance reviews and your celebrations.
When your people know where you’re going, what they need to do today to get there and how they’re expected to behave along the way, alignment happens naturally. Empowered teams stay on the page and move as one.
So ask yourself: “Is our mountain clear? Are we taking action? Do we know the rules of the road?” If not, now is the time to realign.
