Don’t Train Alone

Why every pastor needs a coach

By Jeff Baker

Imagine stepping onto the field at a Major League Baseball game or standing courtside at an NBA matchup. Every athlete, whether a veteran with a decade-long career or a rising rookie, has a coach. In fact, most have several. From the NFL to the PGA, high-performing professionals never outgrow the need for coaching. Why? Because coaching isn’t merely about correcting weaknesses, it’s about unlocking potential and elevating performance beyond what someone can do on their own.

The same principle applies to ministry. Pastors and spiritual leaders carry one of the most essential callings on earth: building the local church and advancing the kingdom. Yet many try to lead, grow and sustain healthy churches by trial and error, hoping to figure it out as they go. At Church Boom, we like to say, “Amateurs learn by trial and error, but professionals get coached.” Pastors are professionals. And because what we do matters eternally, we should approach leadership with the same intentionality and investment the world’s top professionals bring to their craft.

Think of executive coaching as the leadership equivalent of strength training for professional athletes. Coaching doesn’t just help when something’s broken; it helps leaders grow stronger, faster and more resilient. A coach brings perspective, accountability and frameworks that help leaders avoid pitfalls that could set them back or burn them out.

Every great leader you admire likely had a coach behind them at some point, someone who helped them clarify their vision, lead better teams and make wiser decisions. Coaching turns potential into progress and vision into reality. For pastors and church leaders, that means more lives reached, more leaders developed and more communities transformed.

Some pastors hesitate to hire a coach because they see it as another cost. The truth is, executive coaching is an investment, not an expense. It’s an investment in your leadership, your longevity and the health of your church.

When you think about it, coaching is like hiring specialized staff but at a fraction of the cost. A skilled coach provides outside clarity, helps remove obstacles and empowers you to gain traction faster. Instead of adding more staff positions to address internal challenges, coaching strengthens leaders, ultimately strengthening the organization.

The results speak for themselves: better systems, greater alignment, healthier staff culture and a more straightforward strategy to fulfill the vision God has placed in your heart.

In today’s rapidly changing world, ministry has never been more complex or demanding. Pastors juggle spiritual leadership, organizational growth and personal well-being, all while navigating cultural shifts and community needs. Trying to carry that load alone isn’t just difficult; it’s unsustainable. Coaching offers a lifeline, a proven way to lead with wisdom, clarity and confidence.

At Church Boom, we’ve seen time and time again how a pastor’s personal growth transforms their church’s trajectory. When the leader grows, the church gets better. Coaching isn’t just about solving today’s challenges; it’s about equipping you to exceed tomorrow’s vision.

Once you’ve experienced the value of having a coach, you’ll naturally want to pass it on. One of our passions at Church Boom is helping pastors become coaches themselves, empowering their own staff and even coming alongside pastors in nearby churches. We believe that when healthy leaders reproduce healthy leaders, the impact multiplies far beyond any single congregation.

So, if you’re ready to take your leadership and your church to the next level, consider this your invitation. Every great leader invests in their own growth. It’s time to invest in yours. Because when you grow, your church grows, and together, the kingdom advances faster than ever.
